Itinerary

    • Drive from Arusha to Momela Gate.

    • Begin the trek with a fully armed ranger escort, spotting wildlife along the way.

    • Dinner and overnight at Miriakamba Hut.

      • Elevation: 1,387 m to 1,500 m (4,921 ft to 3,000 ft)

      • Distance: 10 km

      • Hiking Time: 4-6 hours

      • Habitat: Montane Forest

    • Trek from Miriakamba Hut to the saddle below Little Meru, with a steep climb and spectacular views.

    • After lunch at Saddle Hut, make a short climb to the summit of Little Meru (3,820m) for superb sunset views.

    • Dinner and overnight at Saddle Hut.

      • Elevation: 2,514 m to 3,570 m (8,250 ft to 11,712 ft)

      • Distance: 8 km

      • Hiking Time: 3-5 hours

      • Habitat: Forest and Moorland

    • Start early (around 1:30 a.m.) for a steep climb to Rhino Point (3,800 m) and Cobra Point (4,350 m).

    • Reach the summit (4,566 m) for sunrise and potentially see Kilimanjaro Peak above the clouds.

    • Descend back to Saddle Hut for a short rest and brunch before continuing down to Momella Gate.

      • Elevation: 3,570 m to 4,566 m to 2,514 m (14,977 ft to 11,712 ft to 8,250 ft)

      • Distance: 5 km up, 13 km down

      • Hiking Time: 12-14 hours

      • Habitat: Alpine Desert, Moorland, and Montane Forest

    • Enjoy breakfast and capture the sunrise if you wake early.

    • Hike through dwindling heathland that transitions into a moonscape as you enter the saddle connecting Mawenzi and Kibo.

    • Stop for lunch and prepare for the summit climb up Kibo.

    • Note: There is no running water at Kibo Huts.
