Meru Climbing

Mount Meru offers an exhilarating climbing adventure in the heart of Arusha National Park, Tanzania. Standing as the second-highest peak in Tanzania at 14,980 feet and the fifth tallest in Africa, this dormant stratovolcano provides a thrilling and intimate experience, often used as a warm-up for the more famous Mount Kilimanjaro. Unlike Kilimanjaro, Meru’s climb is less crowded, offering a more solitary connection with the landscape.

The four-day ascent allows for proper acclimatization while exploring diverse ecosystems. The journey begins on the Momella Route, which winds through lush savannahs and dense tropical rainforests rich in biodiversity. Here, hikers may encounter giraffes, elephants, buffalo, and a variety of bird species, including the rare Narina trogon. As you ascend, the terrain transitions to heath and moorland zones, revealing stunning volcanic features like ash cones and craters, remnants of Meru’s last eruption over 500,000 years ago.

Hikers stay in well-maintained huts, such as Miriakamba and Saddle Hut, offering shelter and comfort after each day’s climb. The final part of the trek involves passing Little Meru and Rhino Point before a moderate scramble to the summit, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the distant peak of Kilimanjaro and the vast Arusha National Park below.

Climbing Meru is best from June to February, with December to February providing the clearest views. With an elevation gain of 10,400 feet from base to summit, this climb serves as an excellent preparation for Kilimanjaro, challenging yet accessible for those with moderate fitness. The adventure culminates in a sunrise summit, offering a breathtaking spectacle that makes the journey truly unforgettable.
