DAY TRIP TO NDARAKWAI RANCH
Overview
Embark on an unforgettable day trip to Ndarakwai Ranch, a private reserve in the Kilimanjaro region with a rich and complex history. This tour offers a unique blend of historical exploration and wildlife discovery, perfect for nature and history enthusiasts alike.
Ndarakwai Ranch, a private reserve, has a storied past. During World War I, the hills in this area were a battleground, leaving behind remnants of trenches that are still visible today. After Tanganyika's independence in 1961, the area suffered from overgrazing, poaching, and deforestation, devastating the local wildlife populations, including elephants. The local tribes were eventually forced to leave these lands.
In 1995, conservationist Peter Jones purchased the 11,000-acre territory, transforming it from a potential wasteland into a thriving wildlife sanctuary. Thanks to dedicated protection and care, the reserve now boasts recovering populations of elephants, zebras, elands, giraffes, wildebeests, buffaloes, kudus, and the rare gerenuk. Since December 2010, even lions and cheetahs have been sighted in the area. Today, Ndarakwai Ranch is home to over 70 species of mammals and 300 species of birds.
Join us on this Ndarakwai Ranch day trip for a captivating journey through history and a chance to witness remarkable wildlife conservation efforts firsthand!
