Weather in Tanzania
Mount Kilimanjaro's proximity to the equator means it does not experience the extreme winter and summer conditions found in other parts of the world. Instead, the region has distinct dry and wet seasons. For those planning a trek, it's crucial to know that the optimal times for climbing are during the warmest and driest months, which generally offer the most favorable weather conditions for a successful summit.
Weather Impact
on Climbing
Climate Change: Weather patterns are being affected in recent years, so it’s important to stay updated with current conditions and forecasts before your trek. Proper preparation ensures a safe and enjoyable adventure in Tanzania's beautiful and diverse landscapes.
Foul Weather Risks: Adverse weather, including rain, snow, ice, and cold temperatures, can significantly impact your trek. These conditions not only make climbing more strenuous but can also increase the risk of injury and decrease your chances of a successful summit. Therefore, aiming for clear, dry conditions is crucial for a safer and more enjoyable experience.
NOTE: High-altitude treks often have unpredictable weather, with temperatures dropping significantly as you ascend. It's important to prepare for everything from warm, sunny days to freezing nights. Keep an eye on weather forecasts close to your departure, and be ready for sudden changes in temperature and conditions.

Best Season
For Climbing
Kilimanjaro
Dry Seasons: The ideal trekking conditions are found from early December to March and from late June to the end of October. These periods, known as the High Seasons, offer reduced precipitation, stable temperatures, and clearer skies, enhancing your chances of reaching the summit and enjoying a successful climb.
Rainy Seasons: The main rainy season runs from March to June, with heavy rains and muddy conditions that can make trekking challenging. Though short rains do usually occur in November, which, while less intense, still adds to the difficulty. We generally do not recommend trekking during these times unless you are an experienced backpacker prepared for challenging conditions.
Best Season
For Wildlife
Viewing
Option 1 ~ Late June to October: This period is excellent for wildlife viewing, as animals congregate around water sources and are easier to spot in the drier conditions.
Option 2 ~ December to February: While tourist numbers are lower, which can provide a more secluded experience, this season sees less wildlife activity and may limit opportunities to see the wildebeest migration, which typically occurs from June to July. Additionally, parks in the Western and Southern Circuits may be less accessible during the long rains from March to May, with some lodges closing during this period.
